With the engine out of the car for transport I took the opportunity to try photogrammetry on it. Engines being the shape they are are hard to measure and have many details that are not that straightforward to measure and then capture in a 3D CAD model.
Photogrammetry opens up the chance to create a 3D model of the engine direct from photographs, that obviously capture far more detail than otherwise would be sensible to spend the time creating.
I followed the process described in the video above after taking about 500 photos I came up with the model shown below:
There’s further work to do to integrate this into the overall 3D model of the car but it was interesting to get this far with it in only a couple of days from starting out.
